The good, the bad and the not so cute effects of going off of birth control
For many women birth control is a part of your daily routine, and probably has been for years and years. Whether you went on for protection against pregnancy, to control acne, manage bad cramps or to regulate your period – there comes a time when you may want to go off of the artificial hormone pills. For many women they go off because they’ve been on for so long they want to make sure when they are ready to have a baby that it isn’t a difficult process. Many women also fear that if you are on birth control for 10 years that it will take at least a year for your period to return. Or you may be like me who one day decides that you want to stop taking the pill because you don’t want to put the fake hormones and chemicals in your body anymore. Either way, if you choose to stop there are some things to keep in mind. Sadly, I constantly wonder that if I never went on BC would it have been better for my body in the long term. I know as a teenager and in my 20’s it took forever to even FIND the right birth control for me. I tried so many and almost all of them stunk! I would get bloated, irritable, emotional, tired, water retention… you name it! The only pill that ever worked for me consistently was LoEstrin 24 (the one in the photograph below and above). It was such a low dose I actually stopped getting an actual period for months at a time, and when it did come it was a spot or two…I’d sit there and be like “was that my period?!” How can that be GOOD or healthy for my body?!
Now that I am getting ready for my wedding in less than a year I am also conscious of wanting to be able to have a baby or two soon after. So I tested going off of birth control to see how long it would take for my period to return. Some side effects of going off the pill cold turkey are weight gain/weight loss, a delayed or infrequent period, increased cramps/PMS symptoms and acne flair ups. Many women report that after going off the pill they went through severe, teenage like acne and break outs. This can be extremely tough to deal with when you are now older and out of that phase. You’ve been confident now for years with clear skin, no break outs, no issues at all. Then all of a sudden you decide to stop taking birth control and now your skin is awful. You are oily, you have painful pimples – the thought of this is terrifying. Who wants to get self conscious of their skin again, avoid going out and choose to sit home on the couch with zit cream instead of being out enjoying time with friends and loved ones.
Don’t feel alone, if you’ve decided to go off hormonal birth control for whatever reason there are some things you can do to help calm the skin during this time of distress/stress on your body. Remember, by going off birth control your hormones are all out of whack. Your skin is now producing more sebum, which holds bacteria. What the pill did to control hormones has now been completely undone and your levels are going crazy. A few weeks after stopping the pill I was fine. I thought this was easy breezy, but a month after I stopped I got my cycle back right away (thankfully, it didn’t take six months like some women report) but boy did it come back with full force: cramps, mood swings, break outs. I was so disheartened. I have had clear skin for years, and here it comes…only one month after stopping birth control and here I had a handful of pimples under the skin rearing their ugly heads. (no pun intended).
What was I going to do? Did I want to run to CVS and refill my prescription and run right back on the pill?
YES! I however have decided that in order to get passed this some day I probably should stick it out. (Update: after stopping taking birth control my period returned almost like clock work a month or so later which I was surprised but happy about. The PMS symptoms did come back in full swing though with bloating, enlarged breasts, tenderness, irritability, craving of foods and mood swings – fun!)
I did some research online and found so many women dealing with this. The products that I was reading to start taking include the following. NOTE – I am not a dermatologist or a nutritionist. All of these recommendations are done because I have tried them and found success. What works for me may not work for everyone but if you are reading this article I bet you are willing to try anything to get past this bumpy road called “breaking out after stopping birth control”
– Saw palmetto (herb, pill form) which is said to have anti androgen properties (not confirmed). Here is a great article I read about saw palmetto and it’s anti androgen benefits here.
– Green tea (the drink or the extract pill) same as the above. Here is a good article on green tea & acne. As an antioxidant I do think its helpful to add to your routine regardless if you have break outs or not. I personally love to put green tea bags in my bottled water and drink tons of it throughout the day.
– Use an exfoliating cleanser (a great one is Burt’s Bee’s). This is my go-to cleanser every day and it has worked for me for years. I have tried a few other cleansers and none come close to this one. It is not harsh on the skin but it helps to get rid of the dead skin cells which are clogging your pores and adding to the breakouts. It’s got calming ingredients like willow bark which helps my skin not feel like dry sand paper.
– Witch hazel/toner (helps to calm the skin and kill the bacteria). Dickinson’s is my favorite and I do this only at night time after I was my make up off with the exfoliating cleanser. Sometimes you will be surprised that your cotton ball still has make up or oil on it. The toner helps to balance the Ph levels in the skin and it feels so refreshing. It does not feel like you just wiped alcohol on your face. You can find this near the peroxide and rubbing alcohol at CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid.
– an acne spot treatment to help the flair ups you see on the surface. I prefer the Clean & Clear Acne spot treatment. It doesn’t dry out the skin and I apply a thin layer all over my face every night after I let it dry after cleansing and toning. It won’t dry your skin out like other spot treatments do. This helps to shrink the size of any blemish in 2 days maybe 3.
– an oil free moisturizer (oddly enough, if your skin is oily you should use a moisturizer. the reason your skin is producing excess oil is it is not hydrated enough/doesn’t have enough oil. So make sure to moisturize).
– Probiotics (to help keep your gut/stomach healthy). I use a cheweable one 2-3 times a day and it helps to keep your body functioning and removing waste and toxins. I also recommend a digestive enzyme after every meal.
Also important is to keep your hands off your face, don’t pop or touch any pimples you do see, drink LOTS of water and take probiotics to help your gut stay functioning. Give your body a few months to work out the hormone kinks. If you’ve been on the pill for years you will probably go through these early stay “purging” break outs. Your body is trying to adjust its hormones and get back to a healthy rhythm. I know it really is awful to go through, but it will pass.
Hair Loss?
Many readers have told me that after going off of birth control they have lost hair or their hair has gotten noticeably thinner. I will say that any time you play with hormones or your hormones change (IE pregnancy) it will effect your hair. My hair has gotten thinner and breaks more now than before but I try to manage this by taking a few products. I really believe in taking a hair supplement to help with keeping your hair and keeping it healthy. I take a few items that I do recommend if you are interested to try anything to help with the shedding or loss of volume:
1. Viviscal – hair supplement 1 month supply – click here
2. Hair Volume – 30 day supply hair supplement – click here
3. Biotin or Hair, Skin & Nails Supplement –
4. Use a natural or organic shampoo and conditioner – see some here
5. use a moisturizing mask once a week
6. don’t brush wet hair and don’t rub it with a towel when its wet
7. stop using heat and stylers at least 50% less than you do now
8. increase your protein intake
9. take a fish oil supplement
Great article! I have been dealing with acne flareups beginning 1-2 months after stopping the pill in January and it is hard to deal with, especially having to go to work everyday with the skin of a teenager. I haven’t used any products yet as I didn’t want to make it worse but you provided a good specific lists. I wanted to ask, how long did it take after stopping birth control for your acne to calm down?
It took about 1 full cycle after going off birth control for things to take a turn for the better. They say it takes about only a week for the hormones from the pills to leave your system. After my period came back it went back to normal. I did get the occasional few blemishes before my period but that was always normal for me. I was fearful it would go crazy but thankfully it didn’t.
I am planning on stopping the pill soon. Do you have any advise for avoiding/preventing weight gain when stopping the birth control pill? Do you have any advise for getting rid of the weight gain if it happens? Any advise to prevent hair loss from stopping the pill? I heard that it is very common too.
I have been on the pill for about a year and I am almost 32. I am thinking about stopping the pill soon because I dont like the way it makes me feel. I dont feel like myself completely and I dont like what it is doing to by body. I work out all the time. My body used to be harder but since I started the pill it got softer. My hair is slightly thinner only I can notice. acne is slightly worse. When I stop taking the pill, I can deal with the pms symptons, acne and irregular periods for a while. I have had acne since I was 9 or 10 years old and it has never gone away. It got slightly better at 20 but when I started the pill it got slightly worse again. I can deal with that. The side effects of stopping the pill I cant deal with are weight gain and hair loss. I am thin but have always been sensitive about my weight and I exercise and eat healthy all the time. Do you have any advise to prevent weight gain and hair loss or to help those go away if I get them?
Hi Lee,
Most of the weight gain you may see will be water weight. You won’t gain weight if you eat at the right calorie amount and eat a balanced mix of protein, carbs and healthy fats. For women the softness we see is usually water retention. Avoid sugars, starches and high salt foods to prevent this and drink LOTS of water. As far as hair is concerned i am a big advocate of eating a diet high in protein and I also take Viviscal and Skin, Hair & Nails supplements. I take collagen chews as well. All those things have helped my hair stay healthy and not fall out 🙂 I hope this hepls you

I asked about weight gain when stopping the pill in a post? I know it is water weight gain on the pill. But it is still water weight gain when stopping the pill? I have friends who stopped the pill and gained 20 to 30 pounds and it looked like fat not water weight. Is it truly water weight when we gain when stopping the pill and does it take long for it to go away? I know not all women get thinning hair when they stop the pill. Since you dont know if it wil happen or not till you stop the pill, can the hair and nails supplements be started before stopping the pill to try to prevent hair loss?
stopping birth control cannot cause actual fat gain if you remain on a good diet that is in a calorie deficit to what you need each day. When people stop the pill their hormones change, which can cause them to eat foods they normally wouldn’t. after awhile your cravings and water retaining amount will normalize. Birth control is not a pill used to help or prevent weight loss. I always encourage a supplement to help with hair health and skin health. collagen is great, so is viviscal.
When stopping the birth control pill if I get the hormonal hair shed that some women get I am planning on taking a hair and nails supplement. Can the hair and nails supplement be stopped after hair growth and fullness returns to normal? I know the pill can trigger genetic hair loss and viviscal would have to be taken permanently for that but if it is just a hormonal shed can it be just taken temporarily? Is viviscal something that has to be taken temporarily or does it have to be taken permanently for hair loss after the stopping the pill?
I personally have always stayed on a hair supplement; whether biotin or viviscal or hair, skin and nails vitamins. I also take folic acid. I have noticed when i stopped taking viviscal i went right back to taking it. it really did work wonders for my hair though keeping my hair moisturized has helped to prevent the breakage.
Hi, I have been off the pill for more than a year and half and I still have acne! I never had acne prior to taking the pill and it’s pretty upsetting to go through this now. The first year was awful. I had TERRIBLE cystic acne for months. It got a lot better after some time and my skin was back to normal and was nearly scar-free. However, it is now going crazy again. Even PMS got worse so something wrong must be going on with my stupid hormones. I don’t get it. Isn’t it supposed to improve with time rather than get worse?
PS: I have been loosing TONS of hair almost since i came off the pill and I have seen very little improvement so far… obviously, the pill messed up big time with my whole system.
Hi hon and sorry to hear you are going through this. I wish I also knew about how BC would effect my body before ever starting it. Have you visited a dermatologist or gotten a blood panel done? Perhaps there is a different underlying issue causing the skin to become so aggrevated?
Do you have any advise for stopping the pill with the least amount of side effects? I have been to womens blogs and forums and they all say that they got hair loss, weight gain, mood swings. etc when stopping the pill. They dont post anything that will help with the side effects. They also dont come back and repost to tell if they lost the weight or the hair loss stopped or hair grew back. I wish they would post and tell their progress. My husband is the only one who knows I am on the pill. My mother doesnt know I am on the pill and I see her every day since we live on the same street. I want to avoid any side effects she would notice like bloating, weight gain or hair loss. I have only been on the pill about a year and my hair is thinning. It feels thinner and I notice more hair coming out in my brush every morning. I am afraid of hair loss and weight gain when I stop the pill. Do you have any advise for any thing that will lessen or let me get the least amount of side effects when stopping the pill?
Hello and I always keep up with my blog to come back and reply to readers so have no fear there 🙂
As for how to prevent some of the side effects as you come off…I would say for me I had to tackle each side effect on its own.
Acne: I increased lots of water during the time i was weaning off of BC. I also knew that I would wind up probably having hormonal break outs around the time my period would come back so I tried my best to alter my skin care routine, food and diet to accomadate that. I also at that time switched to all natural skin care products (mostly) and noticed that helped me alot. I also had a blemish treatment ready to go when I started to feel anything coming back. Truth be told my skin stayed fairly normal after and wasn’t as bad as i thought.
Hair: As you mentioned being on the pill for so long I have seen a change in my hair fullness. Each day my hair would shed, alot. break into pieces in the sink. I take many hair supplement to keep the hair I have now health. I take viviscal, biotin, collagen supplements and Hair Volume. All of these can be found on amazon.
Did your hair shedding and breakage stop after you stopped the pill? I had no problems before taking the pill. Since I have been on it my hair sheds everyday and I get more hair out in my comb and brush every morning. Some are full strands and some are breakage. Did the hair shedding and breakage stop after you stopped the pill?
What is the best way to stop the pill? Should I stop at the end of a pack? Or how to do you wean off of it?
When stopping the birth control pill do womens bodies go completely back to the way they were before the pill or will they always be different or slightly different?
I know I am going to have hair issues because I had hair issues from taking the pill.
I have gotten slightly bigger thighs and my stomach sticks out a little and both are softer. Before the pill my thighs were hard and my stomach was completely flat. Will they go back to being that way when I stop the pill? Will my body return to its pre-pill normal.
TO be honest all of our bodies take work. Putting so many hormones in for years and years it will surely take a toll. Especially if you havent been working out or as careful with what you consume. Will you go right back? Not without diet and good exercise. But it can be done.
I was on birth control for years prior to setting the pill down and walking away. It got to the point where certain pills were making me wonky and getting my system out of whack. The straw that broke the camels back, however, was when I began having 2 periods a month. I decided then that nature didn’t intend for that to happen. So after about 9 years on the pill, I stopped. Unfortunately for me, I began to have severe acne around my chin and neck. My periods went back to a normal cycle and everything else was good (except the acne). I tried everything to get rid of. I went to the dermatologist and they perscribed me topical treatments as well as a pill. Well when I tried to take the pill, I noticed it was working. But yet again, another snaffu. It gave me yeast infections. So I had to quit taking it and stick to the topical treatments. Those didn’t work either. So I finally realized it was a hormonal thing, but after the birth control, my hormones never got right. It was only after I got pregnant that the acne vanished. My daughter is 6 months old now and still no acne!! So now I am at a crossroads ladies: go back on birth control or risk getting pregnant again? I am terrified to go back on birth control because it messed me up so bad before and I don’t think at 28 years old, I can deal with the acne again. But on the flip side, we don’t want anymore children right now. Ah the struggles of being a woman sometimes. Glad I could get my story out there, hopefully some can relate with the struggle =)
it seems to be a viscous cycle. I went off as of my writing of this post and i havent had any bad breakouts yet. my hair still sheds like usually but i do feel like my body feels a bit more back to normal. i got my period at the same time i have always gotten it while on the pill so that didnt change. overall i will see how i feel for the next month or two. acne is my biggest fear as well.
have you tried moving to natural skin care products? that has worked for me. i use either burts bees or derma e products. I also like using natural witch hazel as a great toner!
I went off of BC July 2015 after being on it for 3 years; I didn’t start getting acne until approximately 4 months after stopping. It’s along both sides of my jawline and I never dealt with that prior to BC.
It’s so frustrating and embarrassing.
I don’t know how long until it will finally clear up!
My periods are regular. It’s just the acne that’s raging. 🙁
Thank you for this post~ My acne has come back, heading into my fourth month of being off BC pills/switching to Paragard. :/ I suspect water intake to be the culprit; as I’m always thirsty and consuming substances that are dehydrating. I’m going to make sure to get some witchhazel next time I’m at the store and should consider natural hormone-incorporating diets. Thanks again, I can rest for the night (more searching tomorrow)!
best of luck! i will be sharing my 3-4 week update in the next day or two!
Thank you for this post! I stopped using birth control last November and my face has badly broken out. I have had those days that it’s much better and I feel that my body is adjusting, but then I get more and yes, they are painful. How long did it take for your face to clear up using the products that you are recommending?
My skin did not break out badly at all going off birth control. I recommend using natural products and also using some witch hazel and tea tree oil if you encounter any breakouts
Great Great Great article! I gotta admit I found comfort and relief in what I am going thru. Not easy showing up at work with a new pimple every week.. they are not easy to hide. I can’t keep up with the acne and oily skin… but I thank you for your article… makes a lady feel normal at 37 years old!!
i’ve been off for about six month straight and feel amazing. my skin is clear and i dont feel as tired and bloated during my PMS week 🙂 it’s been fine but the first 1-3 months take time to adjust to the change in chemistry/hormones
