Take a stance and stop buying Angora fur products – companies pledging to stop buying angora fur

Last week I watched a video that was posted by PETA that uncovered the disgusting, cruel and down right repulsive treatment of rabbits in China in order to make fashion items made of Angora fur. I have to say that over the last year I have become more and more aware of just how horrible companies and Chinese manufacturers are to animals and it makes me sick to my stomach. The video, which I will not post because it is beyond traumatizing, shows the horrible life these rabbits have in these jails where they are breed to be plucked alive, heal, regrow their fur and go through the whole thing all over again. I can’t tell you how much this hurt me to watch and since then I have made a pledge to never buy Angora (not that I think I ever did, but now I will purposefully look to make sure any item I do has nothing to do with this sick and cruel treatment).

If you want to watch the video at your own risk it is here: CLICK

I am going to continue to monitor this and update my post as more companies and brands stop using angora in their production of goods. The list continues to grow, which is a positive sign.

No hope: This young bunny is in the process of regrowing its fur while recovering from an eye infection in a naked steel cage
Poor little rabbits are left in steel solitary cages where they develop infection, disease and live in constant fear.

The “living” (if you can even call them that) conditions are vile. The animals have no where to sleep, stay warm, no socializing with other rabbits, no medical care. They are raised to be plucked alive every few months to satisfy the fashion industries desire to wear angora fur. The animals scream in pain as their hair is yanked from their skin and this process is done multiple times throughout their lives. Animals break limbs trying to break free while this is happening. For those that aren’t plucked alive, they are cut with scissors and sheers without any concern of where they are cutting. Rabbits are mauled and cut then thrown in the cage to lick their wounds and wait for the next visit. As I write this I am so sickened by this industry. I know it happens with all animal products, which is why more and more over time I am buying less and less that has anything to do with the killing and torture of animals.

The images, taken at an undisclosed location in China, shows angora rabbits in cages
This is no life for any animal. They are there due to the greed and demand of people to wear their fur. Please, don’t buy Angora.

After the video was uncovered a few large retailers took action. They decided to not carry any products or work with third party vendors who did in their products. I am so happy to hear this because it just shows that when a few big companies say “NO” to actions like this, it will make an impact. All we need now is to stop people from buying it and then the demand will decrease.

Ninety percent of angora fur comes from China, where there are no penalties for abuse of animals on farms and no standards to regulate the treatment of the animals. When you buy a sweater, hat, or other product that contains angora, the angora fur most likely originated in China, even if the finished product was assembled elsewhere.

So far the following companies have decided to stop using Angora:

H &M (read their blog post here)

Top Shop

ASOS

Calvin Klein

Tommy Hilfiger

IZOD

ARROW

Van Heusen

Marks & Spencer

Topshop

H&M

Primark

Next

Newly added: GAP, Forever 21 & Eddie Bauer

YES!!!!!!!

Please stop this awful treatment and opt to not buy anything with Angora moving forward.

Please shop with retailers who care about the treatment of the animals. Not the ones who turn a blind eye for profit. No animal should suffer this way and be treated this way, ever. 🙁

I will continue to update the list of angora-free retailers so that you know where it is safe to shop. PETA has asked all retailers to pull from buying Angora from China, and hopefully more will take the lead of the brands listed above. I can’t imagine they would ignore this but then again sometimes for companies (and people) ignorance is bliss

Public Tweet from H&M:

We have been in close dialogue with PETA for several years and as a responsible company we have decided to permanently cease the production of angora products.

We have put considerable effort into ensuring that our requirements are being met on our sub-suppliers’ angora farms. On November 27, we stopped all production of angora products. We have since then made additional inspections of the farms from which our suppliers source their angora wool. Since angora farms are located further upstream the supply chain, we can currently not guarantee the compliance with our Product Policy and specific requirements for angora husbandry. We have therefore decided to cease production of angora products. – H&M
