Nothing says Sunday Funday like Football Games – Recipes and Snacks for Game Day
Sunday is my favorite day of the week. It’s a day to relax, get together with friends and family around some great food and watch football! This past weekend we hosted at our place with the gang to watch the Cowboys vs. Packers game. We are die hard Dallas Cowboy fans and it was a nail biter as always. I was excited to have everyone over and that meant lots of great food, snacks and appetizers to prepare. I love to host and as we get closer to getting married I look forward to doing it more and more. Everyone was gathered around the television watching the game and me and the ladies were in the kitchen making food. It’s funny that sometimes you think you won’t have enough food and you always wind up sending everyone home with doggie bags because you have way too much. I love to make appetizers and picking foods especially when watching football games so there was a lot of that to go around.
Making some lean mini meatballs is a great game day food. Not only are they quick and easy to pop in your mouth or throw on your plate, but they are delicious. I made them with half lean ground beef and lean ground turkey. I used some egg whites, chopped onion, garlic powder, minced garlic, a small amount of wheat bread crumbs, honey mustard and pepper. These turned out amazing!
My mother in law came with food in hand, as always, and she is an amazing cook. She made a tray of home made crab cakes and some grilled chicken parm which was a fan favorite!
There was so much chicken parm but it is always a good idea to have some on hand as people move from snacks to wanting a bit more food/food. We put this in the oven for about 20 minutes and everyone loved it.
I have learned my lesson when it comes to cooking and my co-worker gave me this adorable apron for Christmas. I am a slob when I am cooking and usually just wipe everything on my pants, so having an apron on was so convenient to stay clean and not make a huge mess of myself.
For appetizers we had a fresh sea food salad, which is very healthy and always a nice addition to my spread. We also picked up some salted fresh mozzarella from a local Italian shop and some sopressata. The guys always love that, I don’t eat pork but it is the best in our town.
This always goes and everyone loves to snack on it while the other food cooks. We get our from Michael’s Salumeria Deli in Lyndhurst, NJ.
On the coffee table I always have snacks, usually the kids come over and they want some chips to pick on. I make sure I have a mix of fan favorites and some healthier options. I like the veggie sticks and the baked snap peas. I also picked up some peanut butter filled non salted pretzels which are yummy, I made some popcorn with coconut oil, the four way hummus tray from Trader Joe’s, whole wheat pretzel rods and quinoa and black bean chips, also from Trader Joe’s. I get so many great snacks for game day there without breaking the bank.
For some healthy dips I made a spread of various veggies and whole wheat crackers. Then I made a greek yogurt spinach and kale dip with some red bell peppers and onions and then my famous guacamole which is avocados, onion, red peppers, seasonings and fat free feta cheese crumbles.
Olives are a big weakness of mine so I made a tri colored olive dish with some black olives, kalmakate olives and green stuffed olives. We also made some proscuitto, mozzarella and roasted pepper sandwiches with balsamic vinegar.
As you can see, Sunday was a bit of a cheat day but we deserved it. I work out five days a week so Sunday is the day I let myself indulge a bit! Especially since our team lost I had to enjoy the food and some homemade vino!
