I have to admit that I was not a big fan of green juices, unless they were made at Jamba Juice. When I received a Nutribullet for my birthday I tried green juices a few times and failed miserably. Nothing seemed to taste good to me so I just used it for my protein shakes. Now that I am getting down to a few weeks before my wedding I have been really stressed about making sure my skin is clear for my wedding day. As someone who has battled acne and hormonal breakouts my entire life, even into my 30’s, I am always looking for ways to make sure that my skin remains clear and doesn’t go into a terrible breakout cycle. It is very true what they say “What you eat shows up on your face.” Many of the foods we eat do in fact cause us to get acne flare ups. I don’t mean the myth that “chocolate or greasy fast food makes you break out” but a healthy, clean diet will certainly effect your skin. Everyday now in the morning after I work out I do a combination in my Nutribullet that I drink to help keep my skin clear. The combination includes all organic produce:
– 1 handful of organic spinach
– 1 handful of organic kale
– 1 lemon squeezed into the cup, just the juice
– 1 organic green apple with the skin in tact or sliced apples
– 1 handful of any berry you prefer (blackberry, strawberry, blueberry or raspberry)
– water to the fill line
I get all of my produce and fruits from a local farmer’s market or from Trader Joe’s. I have to say that at first I was nervous to start to do the green juices again but this one did not taste bad at all. I did not taste the lemon and it was sweet because of the apple. Lemon has been shown to help with clearing your skin and keeping it clear. I had never though to add the juice of a lemon to my greens shake but lemons are packed with so many good for you nutrients like fiber, vitamin c and potassium. There are many health benefits of lemons that have been known for centuries. The two biggest are lemons’ strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers and their use as a weight loss aid because lemon juice is a digestive aid and liver cleanser. Lemons contain many substances–notably citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene–that promote immunity and fight infection. If you think about it, their immune boosting nutrients help to keep the skin clear of acne causing bacteria. The berries are important also since they are high in antioxidants and the greens for their many health benefits like chlorophyll.
I plan to have one of these daily now and will keep my fridge stocked in order to make these when needed. In addition to the greens juice I am also using a bunch of new products for my skin care routine which I will share with you in another post. Having clear skin is something I am always making sure to keep up with. If you’ve suffered from breakouts you know the fear of them coming back, and sometimes due to stress and hormones mine can come and go. I think a lot of it has to do with food and stress. If I find that I am eating more processed foods, things I have on the go when I am in a rush, I do tend to see it in my skin weeks later. I don’t eat fast food, but if I go for a bag of chips or something that is processed out of a box and not organic I do notice a difference. I tend to always go with organic now and make sure all of my foods are fresh and not from a can or box. That has seemed to help to keep my skin clear as well, and also drinking a TON of water daily!
