I’ve always been pretty bad at reminding myself to drink enough water. I guess many of us grow up and stick to some old habits. As a child I don’t think I enjoyed water at all and grew up downing a ton of sugar powder iced tea mix. I became used to only drinking super sweet beverages that water to me was just not appealing. This was surely not a healthy option but I know our parents sometimes just don’t know better or at least in my household we didn’t focus on the healthier options but the cheaper options. It took me a long time to work my way up to 6-8 glasses of water per day but I aim for that each day.
We didn’t have much money growing up so now that I am an adult and make my own choices I eat as healthy as possible and buy the best foods I can afford. In the last six months I’ve started to make minor adjustments to my diet which is by no means bad but I am always looking for things that I can do to improve it. One of those things was waking up each morning and making myself a hot cup of water and adding in slices of freshly cut lemons. I’ve been doing this routine since May which was a month before my wedding. For 7 months I’ve stuck to this morning ritual and it’s helped my IBS (which I developed after taking accurate in my 20s), helped keep my skin clear and also helped me keep healthy even when everyone around me gets colds and the flu.
I originally started to do this since I read a ton of wedding blogs tout the benefits of hot lemon water for skin. I was one bride who was not about to let a blemish or breakout ruin my wedding day. I’ve battled breakouts off and on my entire life and I was doing everything I could to keep my skin clear for my big day. Every morning I would make a cup of hot water and add a few lemon slices and drink it on an empty stomach. I’d also sip it throughout the day in a water bottle but the first thing in the morning came with lots of other health benefits. Now if you also like green tea I love this organic green tea with lemon that you can find at shop rite. It’s $3 or less per box and you also get the antioxidant benefits of the green tea as well.
According to the Huffington Post:
Thanks to all the vitamin C within lemons, your skin reaps the benefits of you drinking the fruit as well. According to FitDay, vitamin C assists in the production of collagen, so having more in your diet can prevent wrinkles from forming. And of course, drinking lots of water is great for skin in general.
I noticed a huge improvement in my complexion when I started to consistently add lemons to my diet. My skin was clear and perfect leading up to and on my wedding day and my breakouts have been so much less and only a few pimples if that each month.
Drinking warm lemon water can help your body with digestion thanks to the citric acid contained in lemon. This acid interacts with various enzymes in your body and stimulates the secretion of gastric juice. Having water with lemon in the AM helps the body to get hydrated after 8 hours or no drinking while you sleep.
There is a ton of research on how lemon water in the morning helps with digestion, immune system support, energy and weight loss. I can’t speak to the following results but I can say that lemons are packed with vitamins and nutrients that are a great way to wake your entire body up in the morning.
