Not Your Mother’s Hair Care Line Review for Volume

I love going to my local Ulta to check out what new makeup or hair care products are out that are worth testing and trying. One of the things I am always looking for is hair care products to help my hair get a bit more volume. I am a hoarder of beauty and hair care products and have an entire drawer dedicated to hair care products and I am always trying out more. My husband makes fun of me and says I am every marketer’s dream because I am willing to always buy new stuff to try. I guess as women we are constantly looking for things to make my hair healthier and fuller. As you can see from my image below I sure do buy a TON of products, lol.

So let’s talk quickly about my hair and current concerns. My hair is color treated, damaged and can also get limp pretty quickly. I am constantly testing out new items and brands to bring some lift and fullness to my hair. The hardest thing that I deal with is that most volumizing hair care products also weigh my hair down and make it feel like it has a ton of product in it. I want products that give it lift without being sticky or make my hair feel dirty. I want my hair to feel soft and movable, but also allow it to be fuller.

On my last visit I ventured down the hair styling aisle and found a bunch of products by a brand called Not Your Mother’s. I had never heard of or seen this line before and due to their cute packaging I decided to investigate a bit further. I noticed that they had a ton of products for all different hair concerns. I wanted to find a leave in conditioning spray as well as some type of volume mousse. I have used volumizing sprays and serums before but those don’t seem to do the trick like a mousse can. I used to use the Frederic Fekkai volumizing mousse, and I loved it, but it was pretty pricey (over $20 a bottle), so I was willing to give a new brand a shot and see how this would work. I picked up two products from Not Your Mother’s because they had a buy one get one 50% off sale.

The two products I bought were Whip It Up Cream Styling Mousse & Knotty to Nice Detangling Conditioner. I think it total I spent $15 on the two products with the deal that Ulta had going on. I wanted a detangler to help me brush my hair out when it is soaking wet without damaging or break it and the mousse to apply before blowing my hair out. When it comes to blowing out my hair I use a round brush to lift and roll my hair as it dries and I love my Elchim blow dryer. I’ve had this dryer for years and it was purchased for me from my mother in law who is a hair dresser. This is a pretty pricey blow dryer but it’s salon grade and it helps to dry my hair much faster than other dryers I have had before.

Both of these products have no alcohol type scent and smell really good. The mousse feels super light and the best way to describe it is that it smells and feels almost like whipped cream. A little bit goes a LONG way. The conditioner is a mist and has no noticeable smell to it. It is light weight and has no stickiness to it. It has keratin protein infusion and makes my hair feel very soft. I spray around 8 pumps of this onto soaking wet hair before I brush it gently with a wide tooth hair comb. It makes my hair super soft and no knots. It important to use a wide tooth comb on wet hair since it is very fragile and can snap easily if you use a regular brush. Once my hair is brushed through I then apply a palm size amount of the mousse to the roots of my hair and then work it through the rest. The focus is on the roots for lift and volume.

I do my bangs and the top of my hair first, focusing on lifting the hair up as I blow dry and hitting it with heat at the root area as I lift. I always use the middle temperature on my blow dryer, not the hottest one. I try to never use the hottest setting since my hair is already pretty damaged from heating tools so I use the lowest heat setting. This product does not make my hair tacky at all and the brush rolls through my hair very easily. As I start to blow dry I can already see the volume at the roots. I continue to do the rest of my hair and then sometimes if I want even more lift I will hit my hair with the cold setting at the end, put my hair in big velcro hair rollers and let it sit for about an hour. My bangs are long so I have to spend some time blowing them out and setting them for a soft finish.

Overall I have really liked using this combination of products to blow dry my hair. I work out almost daily so I have to wash my hair almost every day because it gets sweaty. It’s nice to have products that don’t weigh my hair down and let it feel and look fresh and full. You might want to try these out if you are in the market for some new styling products. Not Your Mother’s has a ton of products for every hair type and concern.
