Bhu (pronounced “boo”) is a Sanskrit word that means “of the earth.” Bhu Foods created snack bars made from non-gmo ingredients for the health and weight conscious consumer who wants cleaner options for snacking. I got my hands on four of their bars to try out and wanted to share my thoughts with my readers. First of all I love the packaging, it just looks “earthy” and “natural” which is hard to come by now a days with so many protein bars on the market. I’ve been eating protein bars for at least five years, ever since I started weight training and weight lifting in order to meet my daily macros of protein. I aim to eat 1 – 1.25 grams of protein per pound of my body weight, so as you can imagine I need quite a few high protein meals and snacks to reach that number before bedtime.
Their protein bars come in a variety of flavors but I got my hands on 4:
Dark Chocolate + Coconut + Almond
Apple Chunk + Cinnamon + Nutmeg
Their bars are gluten free, they use either grass fed whey or vegan protein (the only vegan one I received was the green bar/apple chunk). The others all used a grass fed whey protein. I have to admit my hands, and eyes, will always gravitate toward chocolate things so I tried those two first. I brought them with me in my purse while running around this weekend in case I was in a pinch and needed a protein snack. These came in handy and I enjoyed both of the chocolate Bhu Fit protein bars. One was called “Paleo protein” and used egg white protein and the other was a “Primal Protein” and used grass fed whey. Both were very decadent, chocolate-y and tasted delicious! While the bar might feel a bit small in size it is dense and filled me up.
The bars range in macros but most are between 12-14 grams of protein for around 180-230 calories. They are also pretty good when it comes to fiber, around 8-10 grams per bar, a little low for my usual fiber macros for a protein bar (usually I eat D’s Naturals No Cow Bars which are around 18 grams of fiber per bar so they keep me full for awhile). These did keep me feeling full though and I love that they are made with great ingredients.
Of all four bars I would have to say my favorite was the Dark Chocolate + Coconut + Almond because I love anything with coconut. Coconut flavor or shavings just is incredible to me and I love that paired with the sweetness of the chocolate. I normally do not go toward fruit bars but the apple had a great sweet, natural taste and kept me full, though not as full as the whey or egg white protein. The chocolate bars had small chunks of chocolate that melted in my mouth and it was like a mini dessert in the middle of the day.
If you have specific dietary needs you may want to look into the variety of bars they carry for paleo diets, vegan or organic. They use the highest quality, non-GMO, low sugar, low carb ingredients available. The only sugar in their bars comes from things like the tapioca fiber, shredded coconut, dried applies and dried cherries. These sugars do so much better on my stomach than sucralose or chemical sugars. I prefer my sugar to come from foods and fruits so this is great.
