Dealing with eczema can be difficult. But the worse thing is reading myths about skin problems online. It’s not easy when there is so much conflicting information online. Where do you start? What facts can you believe? What should you dismiss?
So here’s a list of common myths, that you might have heard. This myth-busting sheet will clear up any misconceptions you might have heard.
Myth 1. – Diet is the reason for my eczema: You might find there are some foods in your diet that trigger your eczema. Understanding what these triggers are will help you understand your skin. It will also help you to deal with your condition.
Myth 2. – Showering daily can aggravate eczema: This isn’t true. But, it is important to look after your skin. Moisturizing is incredibly important. That is, ensure that you use a product that is suitable for sensitive skin. Fragranced products are more likely to cause irritation, too.
Myth 3. – Avoid exercise if you have eczema: Looking after your body will not impact your eczema negatively. Knowing what triggers inflammation is important but avoiding exercise isn’t your only option.
Myth 4. – All eczema is the same: This is a myth we hear over and over again. It simply isn’t true. If you want to find out more about your type of eczema, then you can see your doctor for information. You can see a dermatologist, too.
Myth 5. – It’s contagious: Another myth that can be upsetting for those dealing with eczema. It can have a mental impact on how we feel and our confidence. Eczema is not contagious, and subsequently, no one should be felt like an outcast.
Myth 6. – stress causes it: Stress doesn’t cause eczema. However, it can be irritated. Find a way to manage your emotions. Yoga and meditation are great to lease negative energy and reduce stress levels.
Myth 7. – If you have it, your skin will always look awful: Don’t believe this. Your skin can look great, even if you do have eczema. Keep a diary: document good days and bad days. A journal will help build up your confidence, and better understand your condition.
Myth 8. – Ditch gluten and your eczema will clear up: Unless you’re celiac, cutting out gluten will not improve your skin. If you are concerned that your diet is affecting your eczema, go and see your GP to discuss it further.
Myth 9. – Supplements don’t help: This isn’t true. Taking the recommended dose of acidophilus can help control your eczema.
Myth 10. – You can’t go swimming: Don’t let your eczema dictate your hobbies. If the chlorine is irritating your skin, then trying swimming somewhere else. Going swimming in the lake or the sea has other health benefits, for your mind, body, and soul.
Myth 11. – Eczema can be cured: Unfortunately, this is a myth. It cannot be cured, but there are ways that you can improve your skin.
