Planning your big day is equally as joyful as it is stressful. There are the fun parts such as choosing your theme and creating favors at home. But there are also the not so fun parts.

Until you plan a wedding, you might not realize just how much needs to be decided up and arranged beforehand. From dress fittings to choosing venues, it’s a long process that can take up a lot of your spare time and energy. With multiple aspects to get right, it’s hardly surprising that many brides feel overwhelmed by the task. However, the key to staying in control and making your wedding planning more enjoyable is being organised. It might sound obvious, but you would be surprised just how many bride-to-be’s forget to use the most basic forms of organisation. So use this handy guide to keep stress at bay and to keep track of everything that is going on.

Make lists

Lists are something we all use in everyday life, whether they are on a computer or written down on paper. They remind us of what we need to do while also providing us with satisfaction when we get to cross an item off. This is why they are also crucial for planning your wedding day. They can help you come up with ideas, stay focused and clear your mind. When you keep everything in your head, it’s hard to stay on track and concentrate on what needs to be done. You can create shopping lists to help you save time or guest lists to determine who you want to invite. To-do lists that tell you what you need to do in the run-up to your big day are also useful. There are no limits on how many lists you create either. You could create a list of possible words that describe the theme you want to create such as retro or whimsical. You can then write separate lists that go into each descriptive word in more detail. Look for notebooks that can easily fit into your handbag with divided sections to keep your lists in one place.

Use a calendar

As well as lists, a calendar is another vital thing you need to be an organised bride. Wall calendars, in particular, are fabulous at making sure every task is completed when it should be. You can mark the date of your wedding and use that as a deadline. The calendar can then be used to plan your time more effectively, which will allow you to prioritise tasks. For instance, you’ll need time to source venues, photographers and personalised lace wedding invites. If you’re planning on making your centrepieces or decorations, this will also require time and planning. By using a calendar you can give yourself the sufficient time to plan, shop and arrange multiple elements of your big day. As well as a wall calendar you might also want to take advantage of the calendar on your phone. This will make scheduling appointments easier, particularly when you are on the go. Just make sure that each calendar is updated and correlates with the other.

Fill in spreadsheets

Another vital aspect of your wedding day planning is your budget. This will determine how much you can comfortably afford to spend and influence every decision you make. It’s no secret that weddings can be expensive, and it’s easy to overspend. But if you spend too much this can make the early stages of your married life difficult. So to stay in control of your finances and your spending, you need to use a spreadsheet. You can use it to help you establish a budget for your wedding day. Or you can use this to compile a record of everything you’ve bought so far and for how much. If kept up to date, it should be easy to see how much of your budget you have left to work with. This is a surefire way of making sure you don’t overspend and gives you a better understanding of where your money is going. Spreadsheets can also be used to hold contact information, items you are waiting to receive and bridesmaid duties. Again, you can create as many spreadsheets as you deem necessary. Just keep them updated and saved in multiple locations to avoid loss.

Wedding planning is something that many of us have looked forward to doing since we were little girls. So don’t let your lack of organisation ruin this exciting stage or your wedding day. Take what you have learned from this guide to become the most organised bride ever. You won’t regret it.
