It’s been a while since I posted a new video to my YouTube channel and what better topic to cover than a grocery shopping haul I did at Trader Joe’s. I ventured to one of my favorite stores to get my food items for the week and when I returned I wanted to film a video to show you all what I bought, but also to give a quick update on my current diet and meal prepping. For those of you who follow me on social media you now I’ve been a big fan of the ketogenic diet, but due to some weight loss and muscle loss I decided to alter the macros a bit to favor high fat but also high protein. I still eat less than 50 grams of carbs per day but I do have a pretty high intake of protein for a typical keto diet.
I got some feedback from some pretty strict keto diet followers who told me what I was doing was not keto because in fact a keto diet is mostly all fat, moderate protein and low carb. Unfortunately for me I could not maintain my lean muscle this way and quickly dropped 4-5 pounds in the first 2 weeks. For someone who is trying really hard to gain muscle and size this was just not going to work for me. I need to consumer around 1 gram of protein per pound of my body weight so right now my protein is high for a typical keto diet. Either way I am doing what works for me and so far so good. It’s been over 2 months now with keeping my carbs to below 50 grams per day and I am not hungry at all.
What I love about this lifestyle, because I hate the word diet, is that it does not make me feel deprived at all! I eat foods I love, I eliminated tons of condiments and foods that were full of hidden sugars and carbs and as a result I always feel satisfied and full, I have no head aches, I never have bloating and my skin remains clear. I also still have tons of energy for my workouts and plan to continue to keep my macros this way for quite a while. I still do have some carbs here and there, but they are not a part of my day to day meals. I get my carbs from vegetables and some fruits but I keep my fruit intake to a minimum. Overall I love how I feel and that to me is most important. Feel free to comment below with any questions, I’d be happy to answer as best as I can. Remember I am not a nutritionist and everyone’s body and goals are different. This is what works for me currently but I can’t recommend or provide suggestions for everyone else.
My haul today at Trader Joe’s came in around $125. This will last me until likely the end of the work week and is for two people; me and my husband. We both eat the same type of foods so this works out perfectly. Our fridge is stocked with healthy items and I don’t really keep many snacks in the house, though I did buy some Pickle Popcorn at that is the bomb! Popcorn is a snack I love and I will have that once in a while. Overall this trip is filled with lots of protein, lean meats, eggs, tons of vegetables and healthy fats. For four bags filled with food and a case of water I think I did pretty darn good.
Some items that are my favorites in this haul are the riced cauliflower, instant Columbian coffee, premade grilled chicken strips, goddess salad dressing, black olives, shaved brussel sprouts, raw almonds and unsweetened vanilla almond milk. They always have new items so I love to go up and down the aisles to find new things to try out.
For two people I don’t think $125 is bad since this includes food to make breakfast every day, snack,s, lunch and dinners. I prefer to pack my own food to work and it keeps me on track with my diet. Eating out is a downfall of mine, I wind up buying things on the menu I normally would never cook or eat at home. Plus it saves me money to make my own meals and we can all use the extra money in our bank accounts for other things (like fitness gear, lol).
As always feel free to comment below with any questions or feedback. I’d be happy to answer anything you may have on your mind. Also if you are following a similar diet I would love to hear how it has been working for you too. Until next shopping trip…

Are you following your macros still? if so, what is the breakdown?
No I do not log/watch macros are strictly anymore. I do intuitive eating and stay to around 1700 calories per day
Did you decide to do this diet because of “cutting” season? Are you going to continue it when you start bulking?
I am not sure yet, I eat based on current goals so come the fall i will likely bring more carbs back and increase calories by 400 or so per day
I have about 40 – 50 pounds to lose. I’m trying to figure out macros and also meal plan, but I’m a bit overwhelmed. Do you recommend any books or websites?
Thanks so much for all of your blog posts and information sharing. It’s highly beneficial and motivating!
